But it might be the words on the poster that people find so enchanting. Its design is considered simple and timeless and it has become easily recognizable worldwide. It’s hard to say why such a phrase has become so popular. So they decided to sell copies a year later, and since then, the poster has been reproduced, changed, in so many different ways, it has become an icon of the 21st century. The couple liked it so much they had it framed and hung it up at the store, and it became extremely popular within their customers. It wasn’t until the year 2000 that Stuart, one of the shop owners found the KEEP CALM poster in a dusty box that was bought at an auction. Pysykää rauhallisina ja jatkakaa) oli Ison-Britannian hallituksen toisen maailmansodan alkuvaiheessa vuonna 1939 tilaama propagandajuliste, josta on 2000-luvulla tullut suosittu käyttökuva erilaisissa tuotteissa. The bookshop was built at an old Victorian Railway station, and now the bookshelves stand where the train tracks used to be., but the waiting room and tea room are still there. Digitaalinen skannaus alkuperäisestä vuoden 1939 julisteesta. Therefore the public had never seen the poster until 50 years later, when it turned up at a second hand bookshop called Barter Books, which begun in 1991, owned by a couple. But one curious thing I learnt while I did some research is that the KEEP CALM poster was never released, although 2,5 million copies where printed, as it was only meant for times of crisis or invasion. The first of the posters were distributed throughout the country in September of 1939, and were displayed at railway stations and shop windows. Furthermore, the crown of King George the VI was the only graphic element displayed. Originally they were hand-lettered, but the more modern posters use a typography very similar to Gill Sans, which is the Brits equivalent to Helvetica. They were designed to be uniform in style and featured a special and handsome typeface that made it difficult for the enemy to counterfeit. They were meant to offer reassurance to the public during the dark days that lay ahead during war. It seems like the KEEP CALM poster was the third, of a series of propaganda posters created by the British Government in the spring of 1939, during World War II. But what really intrigues me is where the original poster comes from, what is its history, why was it made? I’ve been doing some research and this is what I can tell you! Well, not so much the original poster, but the thousand of variations that have been created. Today’s post is about a poster which seems to have become extremely popular over the last year or so.
